As another busy summer of golf begins to move towards autumn, there are encouraging signs that more golfers are discovering Ayrshire for themselves.
Visitor play has continued to grow across parts of the region, with golfers arriving from elsewhere in Scotland, across the UK and from overseas. South Ayrshire's public courses have reported non-member rounds increasing by 7% year-on-year, while business generated through hotel and tour operator partnerships has also grown.
That matters well beyond the first tee.
Golf visitors stay in local hotels and guest houses, eat in restaurants, visit pubs, use taxis and transport, shop locally and increasingly combine their rounds with other experiences across Ayrshire and Arran. The region welcomed around 600,000 overnight visitors in 2024, generating £161 million in overnight visitor expenditure, and golf is increasingly being recognised as one of the strongest opportunities to attract more high-value international visitors.
But perhaps the simplest explanation for Ayrshire's growing appeal is this:
There is an extraordinary amount of very good golf here – and almost all of it is available for you to play.
Throughout 2026, some exceptionally talented golfers have provided a reminder of the quality and variety of courses found along the Ayrshire coast.
The world's leading women professionals have competed here. Open Championship hopefuls have faced Regional and Final Qualifying on Ayrshire links. Leading boys, girls, men and women amateurs have tested themselves here, alongside a calendar filled with Scottish, county, club and open competitions.
The important point for the visiting golfer isn't necessarily who lifted the trophy.
It's where they played.
When the scoreboards come down and the championship tees return to normal, these courses don't disappear behind closed gates.
You can play them too.
That is one of the great pleasures of an Ayrshire golf trip.
You can stand on tees that have challenged Open Champions and leading professionals in the morning and discover a completely different, less familiar links in the afternoon.
You don't have to be an elite golfer to experience championship golf.
Regional Qualifying for The Open has again demonstrated the challenge provided by Kilmarnock (Barassie), while Final Qualifying brought competitors tantalisingly close to a place in The Open at Dundonald Links.
Both are available to visiting golfers.
The same applies across the region.
Western Gailes regularly appears in conversations about Britain's finest traditional links. Gailes Links has been testing leading amateur golfers for generations. West Kilbride provides another wonderful seaside experience further north, while Prestwick, Royal Troon and Turnberry require little introduction.
And those are only part of the story.
Perhaps one of Ayrshire's greatest strengths is the golf that visitors don't know about before they arrive.
The internationally recognised courses naturally provide the hooks around which many trips are planned, but Ayrshire offers a depth that allows golfers to build very different itineraries around them.
There are traditional members' links, public courses, parkland golf and island courses.
You can play beside the railway one day, look across the Firth of Clyde towards Arran the next and find yourself surrounded by a completely different landscape 24 hours later.
Ayrshire can accommodate the bucket-list trip, but it can equally provide a group of friends with four or five days of excellent golf without every round carrying a bucket-list green fee.
That's an important part of the proposition.
If 2026 has demonstrated the quality of Ayrshire's golf, it has also provided a remarkable reminder of its history.
Prestwick Golf Club and Prestwick St Nicholas both celebrate their 175th anniversaries this year.
Think about that for a moment.
Two golf clubs in one relatively small Ayrshire town are celebrating a combined 350 years of history during the same year.
Prestwick's role in the development of the game is known around the world. The first Open Championship was played there in 1860 and the club ultimately hosted the Championship 24 times.
Yet these aren't historic sites that you simply come to look at.
You come to play them.
That's an important distinction.
Golf history in Ayrshire isn't behind glass. It's beneath your feet.
Nor is Ayrshire relying entirely upon its past.
Investment continues across the region in courses, clubhouses, accommodation, practice facilities and the overall visitor experience.
Historic clubs continue to evolve while Dundonald Links demonstrates a much more contemporary version of the Scottish golf experience.
The result is that visitors aren't being offered one definition of what an Ayrshire golf trip should look like.

Ayrshire offers a rich blend of golf experiences, from its world-famous links to rewarding inland courses set among rolling parkland and historic estates. You can combine championship links with lesser-known favourites, while also discovering inland challenges that sit alongside country houses, boutique hotels and exclusive-use venues that add real depth to a stay. Food and drink are an essential part of the experience throughout the county, with excellent local hospitality wherever you base yourself. From Troon, Prestwick or Ayr you can travel north towards Irvine and the Gailes courses, south towards Turnberry, inland to Ayrshire’s historic towns and villages and rolling hills, or across the water to Arran or Millport, with affordable golf and genuine variety available in every corner of Ayrshire.
Stay three nights.
Or stay seven.
There is another way to follow in the footsteps of the golfers who have competed across Ayrshire this summer.
Enter one yourself.
The region has an extensive calendar of club opens, golf festivals and amateur competitions, many of which welcome visiting golfers.
They can provide a wonderful way of experiencing a course: competition conditions, a full clubhouse and the opportunity to meet the members and other visiting golfers.
For golfers planning ahead, looking through the 2027 open competition calendar could be every bit as important as looking at visitor tee-time availability.
Build the trip around an event and add a couple of other courses while you're here.
There's also a reason we talk about an Ayrshire golf trip, rather than simply a collection of tee times.
Golf tourism matters to the communities surrounding the courses.
Visitors need somewhere to sleep, somewhere for dinner and, occasionally, somewhere to discuss at considerable length the four-footer that somehow didn't drop on the 18th.
Troon, Prestwick, Ayr, Irvine and the towns and villages along the coast provide natural bases from which to explore.
And when everyone needs a break from golf, there are beaches, coastal walks, castles, food and drink, maritime history, islands and countryside waiting beyond the clubhouse.
The challenge may simply be persuading four golfers that they don't actually need to play 36 holes every day.
